For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” -Romans 6:23

Romans 6:23 is a profound encapsulation of the gospel message. It distills the weight of human sin and the grace of God into one verse, balancing the despair of separation from God with the hope of redemption through Jesus Christ. Let’s break it down thoughtfully.

The first part of the verse, “For the wages of sin is death,” points to the inevitability of the consequence of sin. Just as labor earns wages, sin also earns its due payment, and that payment is death—both physical and spiritual. This “death” is not merely the end of life but eternal separation from God. Sin, in its essence, is rebellion against a holy God, and it creates an insurmountable chasm between humanity and its Creator (Isaiah 59:2). The entire narrative of Scripture reaffirms this truth: “The soul that sinneth, it shall die” (Ezekiel 18:20). This is the harsh reality of human existence apart from divine intervention.

Yet, the verse does not leave us in despair. It transitions with the hopeful conjunction, “but,” signifying a turning point. The verse continues, “The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Unlike the wages of sin that are earned, the gift of God is freely given. This contrast between wages and a gift underscores the unmerited nature of God’s grace. Eternal life is not something we can earn through works, merit, or morality. It is entirely dependent on the sacrificial death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, as made clear in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Paul’s language here is deliberate. The term “through Jesus Christ our Lord” reminds us that Jesus is not merely a mediator but the very source of this gift. He bore the penalty of sin on our behalf: “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed” (1 Peter 2:24). Through Him, the sting of death is swallowed up in victory (1 Corinthians 15:55-57).

So, what does this mean for us today as Christians? First, it calls us to live with a deep sense of gratitude for the salvation we have received. Recognizing the gravity of what we have been saved from should compel us to worship God in spirit and truth. Second, it reminds us to share this gift with others. If eternal life is truly the unearned gift of God, how can we withhold such a message of hope from those around us? And third, it challenges us to live righteously, not as a means of earning salvation but as a response to the love of God. As Paul reminds us in Romans 12:1, we are called to present our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and acceptable to God, as our reasonable service.

The journey of faith involves daily surrender to Christ’s Lordship. It means turning away from sin and toward the transformative power of the Holy Spirit. In practical terms, this can look like committing to prayer, immersing ourselves in God’s Word, and seeking out opportunities to be Christ’s hands and feet in a hurting world.

 “Dear LORD, thank You for Your grace and mercy. Thank You for delivering us from the wages of sin and gifting us eternal life through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Teach us to walk daily in Your light, to live with grateful hearts, and to boldly proclaim Your gospel to a world in need. Strengthen us to turn away from sin and to surrender every part of our lives to You. In the name of Jesus Christ, our Redeemer and Lord, we pray. Amen.”

“Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” (Romans 3:24).

God’s Promises in Scripture

In Christ – Pt. 1 | More Than A Sunday Faith

“But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on Him, and by His wounds, we are healed.” -Isaiah 53:5 (KJV)

 Isaiah 53 is a powerful chapter that prophetically describes the suffering and sacrificial death of the Messiah. It paints a vivid picture of Jesus as the suffering Servant who willingly bore our sins, bringing redemption and healing to humanity.

Redemption for Our Souls:

Jesus willingly took upon Himself the weight of our sins. His sacrifice on the cross provided redemption—a way for us to be reconciled with God. Through His blood, we find forgiveness and restoration. Our souls, once burdened by guilt, are set free.

Pierced for Our Transgressions:

Jesus was pierced—crucified—on the cross, not for His own sins (for He was sinless) but for ours. His wounds represent the depth of His love and the extent to which He was willing to go to save us. Jesus’ wounds represent our brokenness—our sin-scarred hearts. His sacrifice brings healing, wholeness, and renewal. In Jesus, we see the perfect blend of Divinity and humanity. His incarnation bridges the gap between God and us. His sacrifice restores our true identity as God’s beloved children. We are no longer slaves to sin but heirs of grace.

Crushed for Our Iniquities:

The crushing weight of our sins fell upon Jesus. His suffering was intense, both physically and spiritually. Our sins have consequences, but Jesus bore them willingly, demonstrating God’s immense love for humanity.

The Punishment for Our Peace:

DEAR GOD: Life With You Is—LIFE~

Being alive in Christ is the only way to LIVE.  Without Christ, there is no LIFE.  He is the life, the way and the truth (John 14:6). Jesus Christ, Son of God – is our Mediator and our High Priest, and our Savior.  He is our Rock and our Redeemer. He is the quintessential unblemished Lamb of God who took away our sins. Our salvation is solidly in place because of His willingly going to the cross for us. Taking on our sin, corruption, and ugliness of the whole world.

He is my LIFE and I LIVE for HIM!

Below are some reminders for you to read and expand your love and growth in Christ, through His Word and His commandments.

  • Ephesians 2:4-10: This passage tells us that God made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in our sins, and that we are saved by grace through faith, not by our works. It also says that we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works that he prepared for us.
  • Romans 6:11-14: This passage urges us to consider ourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus, and to not let sin reign in our mortal bodies. It also reminds us that sin is no longer our master, because we are under grace, not the law.
  • Romans 8:10-11: This passage explains that if Christ is in us, our body is dead because of sin, but our spirit is alive because of righteousness. It also promises that the Spirit of God who raised Jesus from the dead will also give life to our mortal bodies.

These are just some of the many verses that show how we are alive right this moment, only because of Christ.  If you want to learn more, you can read the whole chapters of Ephesians 2, Romans 6, and Romans 8 where you can get a full in-depth study and semblance of understanding in Christ and His doctrine.

When you take the time to get to know Christ you will be transformed into a whole new chapter of your life. It will be a fulfilling and gradual growth in spirit and reflective in all you do on a daily basis. Interactions with others will be easier and life in and of itself will be simpler to navigate.

DEAR GOD: My Life Here Renewed Daily By You There~

1 John 5:13: I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

I have always known the existence of God, since a little child. I was fortunate to be raised in a Christian environment, with church going parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. In fact, Sunday was a fine time to worship, meet and greet…and have others over for family dinners. It was special from sunrise to sunset. The foundation for my life was built upon the Rock, with my parents setting a fine example.

Today, as a senior citizen I look back and realize that God has ALWAYS been with me, through thick and thin. Through rough times and good times. And all the in between times.

As Christians we recognize God’s Word and surrender to His commandments and try to stay within the parameters of His Wishes. Being human, we sometimes fall short, and of course we repent and with contrite hearts we are forgiven.

We learn things from our falls, and we gain insight and wisdom because of them. I think that’s what defines humanity. Our ability to gain strength and depth with each transgression or tribulation.

I don’t know about anyone else, but being Bible savvy doesn’t mean I don’t learn something new each time I pick it up and read. There is a new thought or understanding and room for growth every time.

Living is living while here on earth, but when we are called home, that will be ETERNAL LIFE and all the rewards that come from that. I live daily because of Him living “there.”  And one day, I look forward to my future eternal home.

Until such time, I live for Him and Him alone.
